Summary
Belt width and length drive fit, comfort and returns. This guide covers the common widths, how length is measured for custom orders, and the sizing data buyers should send.

Custom Belt Width and Length Guide
Width and length are the two specifications that generate the most after-sales problems in any belt programme. Both are simple to lock down before tooling, and both are easy to get wrong if the brief only says "standard".
Width: what each size is for
- 25 mm (1 inch): slim women's belts, fashion and dress styles.
- 30 mm (1.2 inch): the most common women's and unisex width.
- 35 mm (1.4 inch): the standard men's dress and casual belt width.
- 38 mm (1.5 inch): casual, needlepoint and golf belts that carry a larger buckle.
- 40 mm (1.6 inch) and above: heavy-duty, tactical, instrument and work belts.
Width also constrains hardware. A large decorative buckle needs at least a 38 mm strap to look balanced, while a slim 25 mm strap needs a proportionally smaller buckle head. When a collection mixes widths, the hardware should still share the same finish so the line looks deliberate.
Length: measure the belt, not the waist
Belt length is not trouser size. The reliable method is to measure an existing belt from the fold at the buckle end to the hole the wearer actually uses, then apply that measurement to production. For a size run, the figure that matters is the distance from the buckle fold to the centre hole, with the remaining holes distributed evenly on both sides.
For adjustable and ratchet belts the calculation changes, because the strap is trimmed by the wearer rather than punched. In those styles the strap is produced longer and the size range is expressed as a cut-to-fit span, which reduces the number of SKUs you need to stock.
Data to send with an OEM enquiry: width in millimetres or inches, centre-hole length per size, size steps, total number of sizes, and whether the style is pin buckle, plate buckle or ratchet.
Sampling confirms the fit
Hongmioo has produced belts since 1997 and works to the buyer's own size chart while flagging inconsistencies before tooling starts. MOQ begins at 50 pieces, samples are ready in 10-15 days and bulk orders ship in about 35 days after approval. Production runs in our own factory with ISO 9001 certification, BSCI and SEDEX audits and VF compliance.
Send your size chart together with a reference sample or reference images, and we will return a quotation, a sampling plan and a specification sheet you can sign off.

Working on a belt range? Send your width, size chart and target market. Our design team will confirm the specification and return samples in 10-15 days.
