What Is a Gait Belt and How Is It Used?
A gait belt is a sturdy webbing belt worn around a patient's waist, designed to give caregivers a secure handhold when assisting with standing, walking, or transferring. It is a standard safety device in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and home care settings. The belt wraps snugly around the patient's waist and is secured with a buckle — the caregiver grips the belt to provide support and prevent falls.

How to Use a Gait Belt Correctly
Position the Belt

Secure the Buckle
Fasten at the front or side depending on caregiver preference. Verify the buckle is fully engaged before applying weight.
Grip from Behind
Stand behind or beside the patient. Grip the belt firmly with both hands, palm-up or palm-down depending on the technique.
Assist Movement
Use the belt to guide the patient during standing, walking, pivoting, or sitting. Never lift entirely by the belt alone.
Gait belts are assistive devices, not lifting devices. Always follow your facility's safe patient handling protocol. Inspect the belt regularly for wear, fraying, or buckle damage.
